Councilmember Herb Porter Receives Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership

This month, Councilmember Herb Porter received his Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in four core areas:
• Roles, responsibilities and legal requirements
• Public sector resource management
• Community planning and development
• Effective local leadership

Those who earn the advanced certificate continue to strive for excellence by attending conferences and trainings, serving their community, and further developing leadership skills. To earn the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership, Porter completed more than 60 hours of training credits and demonstrated community service.

“Cities and towns around the state are continually transforming in light of changing laws and the need to meet new challenges and opportunities,” said AWC Chief Executive Officer Peter B. King.

This would be the second Ferndale Councilmember currently serving to receive their Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership. Councilmember Ali Hawkinson received her certificate in January 2021.

“Our Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership recognizes mayors and councilmembers who continue to enhance the tools they need today to understand the legal landscape, plan for the future, manage their resources, and foster strong relationships. The elected officials who earn this certificate demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and a desire to bring new ideas back to their community.”

Traffic Impact: Malloy Avenue closed to all traffic between Calico Loop and Willow Court on Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 23

Malloy Avenue will be closed to all traffic between Calico Loop and Willow Court on Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 23. During the closure, northbound thru-traffic will be detoured at Thornton Street and onto Vista Drive and Aldergrove Road. Southbound thru-traffic will be detoured at Aldergrove Road and onto Vista Drive and Thornton Street. Local traffic will be permitted past barriers at Thornton Street and Aldergrove Road, but no traffic will be allowed through the closure area. This closure is necessary to complete work on the City’s sanitary sewer system in association with the Pump Station 19 Decommissioning Project. Citywide Scavenger Hunt Begins July 2nd

This July, the public is invited to participate in this year’s citywide scavenger hunt in the City of Ferndale. It is called the Great Ferndale Frontier Folly.

Clues will be released through the City’s facebook, twitter and website starting July 2nd that will lead participants to find the hidden cow banners throughout Ferndale’s parks. Find the cows and complete other activities, such as talking with a veteran, finding an unusual plant or animal or visiting the police station to score points – the highest scoring teams win cash prizes, toys and more.

“This is a great opportunity to explore your city, meet your neighbors and solve some riddles,” said Recreation Coordinator Riley Sweeney. Scorecards can be picked up at City Hall or downloaded from the City website. Participants must turn in their scorecard by Tuesday, July 27th to be eligible for prizes.

City Hall, Police Station Open for Regular Business Hours starting June 14th

Ferndale City Hall, Police Station Open for Regular Business Hours starting June 14th

With the installation of new COVID safety measures complete, the Ferndale City Hall and Police Station will be open to the public for full business hours, 8:30AM-4:30PM Monday through Friday, starting June 14th.

“We appreciate the public’s patience while we made the modifications necessary, and we are ready to once again assist our community in person,” said Mayor Greg Hansen. The reopening is well in advance of the statewide reopening, currently scheduled for June 30th for all public facilities.

City staff has continued to work throughout the pandemic, accessible via email, phone and video conferencing to meet the needs of the public. The city recently launched a new utility billing portal to allow for more transparency, allowing for even more remote access to city documents.

Traffic Impact – Malloy Avenue & Thornton Street – 1 Week Impact

Malloy Avenue will be closed to all traffic at Thornton Street between Monday, June 14th and Friday, June 18th

The intersection of Malloy Avenue and Thornton Street will be closed to north and southbound traffic next week. During the closure, northbound traffic will be detoured from Malloy Avenue at Seamount Drive and directed onto Vista Drive (truck traffic will be detoured onto Vista Drive at the roundabout). Southbound traffic will be detoured from Malloy Avenue at Aldergrove Road and onto Vista Drive. East and westbound traffic on Thornton Street will be flagged through the work area, but will not be permitted to turn onto Malloy Avenue during the closure. Details are shown on the attached map.

This closure is necessary to allow construction crews to pave Thornton Street from Malloy Avenue to Shelby Court in association with the Thornton Overpass project. Ferndale Police Seek Public Assistance Identifying Downtown Vandals

Ferndale Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying the subjects in the video above.

At approximately midnight on 5/23/2021, a male subject and his female companion were recorded on surveillance cameras in the 1900 block of Main Street and 5600 block of 3rd Ave.  The male subject is recorded damaging a tree in one video and taking a chair which was later found damaged in another.

Ferndale Police has probable cause for the unidentified male and would like to contact the female about her involvement.

City Hall Open to the Public Tuesday/Thursday 10AM-2PM

City Hall is reopening to the public! We will be open from 10:00AM-2:00PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays going forward, with the goal of being fully reopen for business hours by the end of June.
