There are many things that residents and businesses can do to prevent pollution and protect water quality. Stormwater source control best management practices (BMPs) prevent stormwater runoff from coming into contact with pollutants and are the most cost-effective method of preventing contamination of stormwater, surface water, and groundwater.
The source control program protects stormwater, surface water, and groundwater in Ferndale and beyond, and is a requirement of the Department of Ecology Western Washington Phase II Stormwater Permit.
This program includes:
- Providing information on required source control best management practices (BMPs)
- Creating an inventory of sites with potential pollutant generating activities and uses
- Conducting inspections of sites with potential pollutant generating activities and uses

Inspections will focus on publicly and privately owned institutional, commercial, and industrial sites which have the potential to generate pollutants to the City's municipal separate stormwater system MS4.
