The Ferndale Arts Commission is calling for artists from across the Pacific Northwest to install murals in downtown Ferndale. Artists are invited to submit designs, that they would then install in downtown Ferndale in the summer of 2019. Mural sizes will vary depending on location but all designs will be vetted by the Ferndale Arts Commission and the appropriate property owner.
“Our goal is to bring new art styles that will complement the area and inspire our community,” said Councilmember Rebecca Xczar, council liaison to the Ferndale Arts Commission.
Interested artists should submit at least one sketch in color, with height and size preferences, along with any relevant previous experience (pictures of prior murals completed or other art projects).
Deadline is November 30th, 2018. Send all submissions to Rebecca Xczar at rebeccaxczar@cityofferndale.org. For more information, please call (360) 319-2677.
What do you want to see in your downtown? The City is looking to jump start our downtown by encouraging residential and commercial developments that allow folks to live within walking distance of Main Street, and we are soliciting your feedback through social media. You can look at the outline of the Catalyst program that being proposed by clicking here.
As we dig into how to encourage this development, what we need to know from the public is . . .
Remember that the City does not conduct private development, but we can encourage some projects to move forward through tax incentives.

Last year, over 2,000 Ferndale residents enjoyed our “Summer of Fun”. They marveled at a solar eclipse, searched for treasure across the City, played tug-a-war with their friends and family and ate delicious food at Star Park. This year, we are expanding our recreational activities to include even more events.
Help us decide which events to hold and when to offer these recreational opportunities by taking our 2018 Parks Activities Survey. It shouldn’t take more than five minutes, and your input will shape what we offer this year.
The Parks, Recreation, and Trails Advisory Board is holding a volunteer clean up day at Griffintown Park, Saturday, Nov. 4th from 10am-Noon. Participants will be cleaning, weeding, and improving the park as well as assisting with an installation of a piece of temporary art in the park. This is the third in a series of volunteer events focused on our parks located throughout the city, the last event focused on Oxford Park. Volunteers are invited to bring their own gloves, garden shovels and rakes.
Griffintown Park is located along Second Avenue, adjacent to the Portal Way roundabout. This park features a Veteran’s Memorial and plaques of historic Ferndale figures.

Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue will be closed Saturday from 3pm to 5pm for Downtown Trick or Treat. Each year over 2,500 children and their parents hit the streets of Downtown Ferndale in search of candy as part of this event with over forty local businesses participating. Traffic will be detoured on Alder Street but plan on alternate routes if possible.
The event is organized by the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce. After Downtown Trick or Treat, head over to Pioneer Park for “Haunt the Park” starting at 5pm, a spooky experience for all ages.
The Parks, Recreation, and Trails Advisory Board is holding a volunteer clean up day at Flair Park on Saturday May 13th at 10am.
